Dodgers News: If Zack Greinke Could, He’d Trade A.J. Ellis

Things are looking up in Dodgerland as the Dodgers finished off a three-game sweep of the Rays over the weekend to stretch their NL West lead to 7.5 games.

The Rays had the opportunity to go up against Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw as the former Cy Young award winners allowed just one earned run combined.

Back in June, as the Dodgers were going through a rough stretch, Greinke and A.J. Ellis tried to come up with creative ways to improve the team according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com:

Greinke replied, “Let me think about it.” Then, while sitting on the bench during the game, he informed Ellis of his solution. The first thing I’m doing is trading you and signing Brian McCann, Greinke said, referring to the Atlanta Braves’ catcher, who is a free agent at the end of the season.

Greinke has one of the best minds in baseball as it’s been mentioned several times that during his initial meeting with the Dodgers, he complement them on drafting highly touted prospect Corey Seager.

As the season’s progressed, Greinke’s only gotten stronger as his velocity is up in the mid-90’s and the Dodgers are 15-4 in his starts.

Meanwhile, Ellis has had a very productive season as he’s hitting .261 with six home runs and 40 RBIs as he’s hitting in either the six or seven spot in the lineup.

When asked about the conversation, Ellis talked about how enjoyable Greinke is:

He’s probably the most refreshing teammate I’ve ever had,” Ellis said. “I’m enjoying every second with him.

With Greinke pitching the way he is, the Dodgers have arguably the top duo in all of baseball as he and Ellis have formed a great relationship this season.

  1. We have to have Kemp back in the lineup but we can’t sit our other three outfielders on the bench everyday. When there is a lefty pitching against us we can sit either Andre or Crawford for that day. When a righty is pitching, we need left handed batters to start. We are overloaded with talent so we have to use it wisely and not let someone get rusty.

    1. Agree but four starters for three positions? Somethings got to give. DM has already pulled the four aside and explained that the hot bats will play. I predict a trade somewhere along the line, who it will be is anybody’s guess.

      1. Yes and as soon as you trade someone another one goes down with an injury. We were very lucky to have ALL FOUR of these guys. I say don’t take chances if you are going for the playoffs. If you have no chance, sure trade someone but the way things are going, keep all four of them.

      2. Trade definitely not in the question. Four GREAT starters for three positions is ideally perfect.! Especially knowing the way puig plays and kemp unfortunately getting injured constantly. Having options with schumaker, hairston…..vanslyke is also that muxh better. I believe dodgers outfield is set for playoffs. But who knows what next year will bring.

  2. We need a healthy Beast Mode Matt Kemp back!! I hope he takes it easy and comes back healed and strong as ever! #27 is my hero….The Dodger better not trade him 🙁
