Dodgers News: Jansen Won’t Discuss Contract, Yet

Kenley Jansen is one of the premier closers in baseball, and he’s set to become a free agent at the end of the 2016 season. That fact has made his possible free agency an interesting thing to watch already. He and the Los Angeles Dodgers have yet to come to an agreement, and they will have to wait.

According to Jansen himself, he and the Dodgers will not be discussing a contract extension during the season in order for Jansen to focus on the season itself. It’s something a lot of players do in order to fully prepare for what’s ahead without getting distracted, but it is still something of note.

From Bill Shaikin, contact reporter for the Los Angeles Times:

“I’m not going to talk about it,” he said. “They need me here right now. I’ll be the leadership for the bullpen. I’ll try to help the team win and get to the playoffs, and hopefully we can get to the World Series. I’ll just want to talk about that in October.”

Jansen is third all-time among relievers in strikeouts per nine innings, and fourth all-time in FIP. He’s one of the most dominant end-of-the-game entities in baseball, and the Dodgers are lucky to have him. However, they did try to acquire Aroldis Chapman this offseason, and that could have rubbed Jansen the wrong way.

There’s no telling what Jansen and the Dodgers will do in the offseason, but hopefully Jansen is on the team for the foreseeable future considering just how good and lights out he has been throughout his career. He’s a huge part of the team, and not having him would be a major blow for the franchise.
