Dodgers News: Joe Wieland Joins Team, Expected To Start

Joe Wieland

UPDATE (2:36 PM): Ken Gurnick of MLB.com is now reporting that Joe Wieland will start on Wednesday, not Thursday.

When the Los Angeles Dodgers designated right-hander Scott Baker for assignment, the first question became who would start for the team on Thursday in Milwaukee.

Baker was the seventh starting pitcher that the Dodgers used this season and then Carlos Frias became the eighth soon after. Baker went just four innings and allowed seven hits and four runs in his latest start, prompting the Dodgers to recall Daniel Coulombe until they needed a starter on Thursday against the Brewers.

According to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, there is a right-hander in town to take the start on Thursday:

Wieland was acquired by the Dodgers along with Yasmani Grandal in the trade that sent Matt Kemp and Tim Federowicz to the San Diego Padres. Beginning the year in Triple-A, Wieland has made four starts and is 3-0 with a 3.60 ERA. He’s thrown 20 innings, struck out 22 hitters and walked just two. He was expected to start his fifth game of the year on Thursday for Oklahoma City, but will now be the latest to audition for the Dodgers rotation.

The right-hander has appeared in nine games (seven starts) in the big leagues and has a 5.31 ERA. His last start came last September against the Colorado Rockies, where he pitched 5.1 innings and allowed three runs in a win.

Wieland will become the ninth starting pitcher used by the Dodgers, and puts his name into the hat for fourth/fifth starter. The Dodgers lost Brandon McCarthy for the year with a UCL tear and left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu is not expected back until June. A strong start by Wieland won’t guarantee a second start for the 25-year-old judging by the way the front office has been moving this season.

  1. I wish they would bring up David Aardsma and give him a chance to help close out games till Jansen is ready. Seems to have nothing left to prove in OKC

  2. Bull Pen hasn’t been the problem. The results say the BP is doing very well. And Jansen may be back this month…
