Update (10:30 a.m., 4/5/14): According to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, Josh Beckett’s injury is a sore ankle:

Hernandez also reports Beckett may join the team next week:

Dating back to Spring Training, several Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers have had bad luck with respect to injury. At one point in time, Josh Beckett, Zack Greinke, Dan Haren, Clayton Kershaw and Hyun-Jin Ryu have all had their bouts with some form of an injury.

Kershaw was placed on the disabled list and may not return until May or June, while Greinke and Haren both returned from their respective injuries. Beckett appeared to be the next pitcher in line to re-join the Dodgers, making a rehab start with the Dodgers’ Single-A affiliate, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Friday’s start was one that general manager Ned Colletti said the right-hander would need to make and left open the possibility more would be required before Beckett were to make his regular season debut.

Beckett’s return may have suffered a setback as he reportedly left his start early with an apparent injury after fielding a bunt, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times:

Prior to exiting the game, Beckett had a rough first inning, surrendering back-to-back home runs. He would later settle in, recording five strike outs before the apparent injury. The severity of the injury is currently unknown and while it is still possible, it is in question whether Beckett will pitch for the Dodgers next week. If Beckett is able to pitch, he would be an option to start on Wednesday when the Dodgers host the Detroit Tigers.

Potentially adding him to the rotation at that time would also give manager Don Mattingly the option of pitching Hyun-Jin Ryu on an extra day of rest. Ryu admitted feeling fatigued on Sunday, which may have led to his subpar performance against the San Francisco Giants on Friday. While being able to add another arm to the rotation, rushing Beckett back may be counterproductive as it could increase the odds of him being re-injured.
