Presumed fourth starter Dan Haren admitted that he had a tired arm yesterday after his start and it was reported this morning by Ken Gurnick of Dodgers.com that starter Josh Beckett is dealing with a sprained right thumb. After the game, interim manager Tim Wallach couldn’t shed any light on his status for Friday’s scheduled start:

As far as I know, he’s going to be throwing. I don’t have all that information yet. It won’t be while I’m managing the team so I really don’t know.

On yesterday’s broadcast, analyst Orel Hershiser mentioned that Beckett wasn’t throwing any of his off speed stuff in his bullpen session due to an irritated right thumb. It turns out that he sprained the thumb 10 days ago when it got caught between doors in the clubhouse and is annoyed he’s dealing with such a minor injury.

Beckett is on the way back from TOS (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome) surgery and has had mixed results in his first two spring starts. In his debut against the San Diego Padres, the 33-year-old threw two innings, allowed one hit and struck out three. However, in his second start, he allowed five runs in three innings, including three home runs to the Seattle Mariners.

The Dodgers signed starter Paul Maholm on the first day of Spring Training and while Beckett hasn’t been preparing to pitch during the Australia trip, the left-hander could start the season in the rotation. Don Mattingly is away from the team for tomorrow’s game and more information about Beckett’s availability should be known when he’s back in camp.
