Dodgers News: Judge Denies Motion To Dismiss Lawsuit Against Puig

[new_royalslider id=”136″] Since signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Yasiel Puig has refused to discuss the details of his attempts to flee Cuba and eventual success in doing so. In April, both Los Angeles Magazine and ESPN released reports that detailed Puig’s escape to Mexico and the countless hurdles he needed to overcome and endure before landing in the U.S.

Along with claims of drug smugglers getting involved, ransoms and escalating threats while Puig’s escorts awaited payment, the Dodger right fielder also had a lawsuit filed against him.

According to Scott Eden of ESPN, Miguel Angel Corbacho Daudinot is suing Puig for $12 million under a statue that permits non-U.S. citizens to sue in the event they were tortured:

The plaintiff, Miguel Angel Corbacho Daudinot, originally filed suit against Puig in July 2013 under a little-known federal statue called the Torture Victim Protection Act, or TVPA. Signed into law in 1992, it allows torture victims who are not U.S. citizens to sue their alleged perpetrators in U.S. courts. Corbacho is seeking $12 million in damages.

Corbacho alleges Puig defamed him to Cuban authorities after a failed attempt to get Puig out of the country in 2010. While the lawsuit wasn’t dismissed, Puig’s attorney expressed little concern:

All they did was show a cause of action,” said Puig’s attorney, Sean Santini, outside the courthouse in front of three TV cameras from local Miami Spanish-language channels. “Now we’re looking forward to proving our case.”

Despite the revelations, Puig has remained silent in addressing his escape, so too have the Dodgers. Puig released a statement through his attorney which spoke of Puig’s focus being on helping the team win.

Manager Don Mattingly expressed concern for Puig, who didn’t appear to be affected by the reports. Whereas Puig and the Dodgers haven’t spoken on the matter, the movie industry was quick to act, with Brett Ratner purchasing the rights to create a movie based on Jesse Katz’s Los Angeles Magazine expose.

Though hurdles still remain before the trial can begin, a date has been set for November of 2015.

  1. The word is “statute” not “statue”. It’s not a piece of art. You wrote it twice in this article..
