Stare Senate President Pro Tem Kevin De León (D-Los Angeles/acting governor) declared July 8, 2016, “Vin Scully Day” in California.

Scully was overwhelmed when Elysian Parkway was renamed Vin Scully Ave, but he earned the right as the voice of the Dodgers to have such a honor given to him. Imagine going to a Dodgers game, riding on Vin Scully Avenue on Vin Scully Day.

De León is serving as acting governor and taking full advantage while Gov. Jerry Brown and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom are out of state on vacation until Monday.

“The voice of Vin Scully has become the song of summer for generations of Los Angeles baseball fans and aficionados of excellence in sports broadcasting,” De León wrote in the proclamation acquired by the L.A Times.

“I urge all Californians to take time to appreciate the treasure that is Vin Scully as not just an announcer but, as former baseball Commissioner Bud Selig put it, ‘the embodiment of the goodwill that our game inspires,’ and a reminder of why baseball is ‘forever the national pastime.'”

Scully has said on multiple occasions that what he will miss the most is the “roar of the crowd”. In the proclamation De León cited one of Scully’s most famous calls quoting the iconic broadcaster:

“In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened.”

The call came after Dodger Kirk Gibson hit a walk-off home run against the Oakland Athletics in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.

Happy Vin Scully Day!
