Dodgers News: Justin Turner Placed On DL, Carlos Triunfel Recalled

[new_royalslider id=”202″] With a rather easy victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, coupled with a San Francisco Giants loss, the Los Angeles Dodgers have pulled within one game of first place in the NL West.

The Dodgers used a six-run second inning to blow past the Cardinals, but it also came at a price. Justin Turner, who started at third base in place of Juan Uribe, suffered a strain hamstring as he rounded first on his RBI double.

Turner’s injury occurred in a similar manner that Uribe strained his for the second time this season. As expected, the Dodgers have placed Turner on the 15-day disabled list and recalled infielder Carlos Triunfel from Triple-A:

Triunfel, who was claimed off waivers in April, was recently with the Dodgers and was sent back to the minors when Uribe returned from the DL June 26.

It’s a tough break for Turner as he appeared to be hitting his stride in the month of June. Including Saturday, Turner is hitting .389 this month with 22 hits and 11 RBIs. He’s also been a dependable pinch-hit option, with Thursday’s RBI single

As for Triunfel, the 24-year-old has appeared in seven games with the Dodgers this season primarily serving as a defensive replacement. He’ll join a group of infielders that now consists of two healthy and experienced players — Dee Gordon and Uribe — and a rookie in Miguel Rojas.

Hanley Ramirez was also removed Saturday due to calf tightness. It’s been a difficult season for Dodger infielders with respect to injuries. Particularly for Ramirez, who’s battled through an assortment of relatively minor injuries.

While Turner will be eligible to be reinstated from the DL after the required 15 days, it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if the Dodgers opt to take a cautious approach in working him back. They’ll certainly miss Turner’s bat for the time being, but rushing him back and possibly increasing the risk of a second hamstring strain would be a larger loss.
