The Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers played to 16 innings Tuesday night in a game that set an MLB record for most players used (58) and was accompanied by rainy weather — something fans at Dodger Stadium aren’t particularly accustomed to.

While the box score reflects Colorado coming away with a win behind Nolan Arenado’s solo home run off Mat Latos, a fourth-inning double play the Rockies third baseman was involved in caused a stir. With the Rockies in a shift, Arenado was part of the turn at second base on an Adrian Gonzalez grounder:

Justin Turner’s aggressive slide may have been tied to him appearing frustrated with Rockies starter Chris Rusin’s attempt to quick pitch him; Chase Utley also appeared to take umbrage with Rusin’s pace at one point.

Turner and Rockies manager Walt Weiss exchanged words between innings, and Arenado yelled in the direction of the Dodgers dugout prior to the bottom of the fifth beginning. After his club’s loss, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly’s expressed a sense of confusion over the controversy the slide created. “Wallach went and looked at it, thought that it was clean. I’m sure if they look at it, I don’t think they will have a problem with it,” he said.

“I’m not quite sure what the problem was. Arenado didn’t seem to have a problem with it. I don’t know what the problem was.” According to Ken Gurnick and Thomas Harding of MLB.com, Weiss thought the slide was late:

Nolan really didn’t have an issue with it. I was the one that did. … I thought it was late,” Weiss said of the slide.

Arenado refused to offer details on the words he had with the Dodgers and shifted the focus on the outcome of the game:

I think you guys saw me saying some things. I’m not going to say what I said. But the game’s over. We won.

There wasn’t any retaliation after the incident. Including Wednesday’s game, the Dodgers and Rockies have four meetings remaining on the schedule this season.
