Dodgers News: Kershaw Doesn’t Blame Ramirez For Error In Seventh

[new_royalslider id=”188″] Clayton Kershaw threw arguably one of baseball’s best games Wednesday as he became the only pitcher to record 15 strikeouts without issuing a walk during a no-hitter.

Kershaw struck out the first batter he faced and he continued to dominate the Colorado Rockies lineup in the following innings and he carried a perfect game into the seventh.

The dream of completing the rare feat came to an end as Corey Dickerson led off the seventh inning with a chopper hit to Hanley Ramirez that the shortstop charged to field, but then threw it away and was charged with an error.

The error was Ramirez’s 10th of the season through 65 games; he committed 13 last season in 76 games. Although the error cost Kershaw his perfect game, the left-hander came to the defense of his shortstop, according to Everett Cook of the LA Times: :

It wasn’t on purpose,” Kershaw said after the game. “It was a pretty tough play. Under normal circumstances, that’s pretty close to a hit.”

Ramirez was in the lineup Wednesday despite leaving Tuesday’s game after taking a line drive off his right hand. The shortstop has had his share of troubles defensively this season and didn’t blame the error on his injury:

Tough play, you know?” he said. “You just have to catch the ball and throw it. In that situation you would rather have the error than just let it go.”

Although he wasn’t pleased with the decision, Ramirez has been removed from games for defensive purposes on multiple occasions this season. Manager Don Mattingly made a change in the eighth, replacing Ramirez with Carlos Triunfel, who is touted as having a strong glove.

The move may have come one inning too late but nonetheless, Kershaw is etched in the record books as throwing the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 22nd no-hitter.

  1. You need an experienced infielder in that moment 10 out of 10 he makes that play. They all still got him a no hitter, hats off to my boys

  2. Hats off to Clayton Kershaw for an amazing game and the classy way he handled the Ramirez screw-up. Love Hanley’s offense, but no one will ever confuse him with a good (or even mediocre) shortstop. Checked his defensive stats after the game, and found that he’s near the bottom in all categories for shortstops in the NL. Yeah, players make mistakes, but the error was made on a semi-routine grounder, one that 90% of MLB SS’s would have handled easily. (And don’t forget, the Marlins went out and got Jose Reyes, moving HR to 3rd base; they obviously knew what they were doing.) With Erisbel Arrueberrena, a really slick-fielding shortstop, coming up (he’s now in AAA ball), I suspect Ramirez’ days in L.A. are numbered, since this is the last year of his contract. Can’t say that I’ll miss him.

    1. We’ll if Hanley leaves L.A. He will be greatly missed! Yes his gloves is mediocre at best, but he brings so much more! Hanley is a class guy that when his bat is on top of his game their is no better! Team player that players respect and admire. Along with the fans
