Dodgers News: L.A. Signs Steve Geltz to Minor League Contract

The Dodgers have added bullpen depth in the form of Steve Geltz, according to multiple reports.

Geltz is a former Tampa Bay Ray. The right-handed reliever was claimed by Milwaukee on Nov. 3 and let go in December. It isn’t his first tour of Southern California: Geltz debuted with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2012 before being traded to Tampa Bay prior to 2013.

After spending a season in Durham, Geltz was suspended 50 games for his second violation of a minor league drug test for recreational marijuana use. In 2015, he rebounded to become a staple in the Rays’ ‘pen. He’s since regressed and is continuously haunted by an inability to keep the ball in the park.

Geltz is a classic buy-low move. Los Angeles wants to add to its reliever group and he represented a project with potential. Geltz has flashed ability at the professional level, including setting down 32-straight batters for the Rays. He has up to five years in team control.
