Dodgers News: Matt Kemp Underwent Successful Left Ankle Surgery

Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp was lost for the season in late September due to a left ankle injury and after undergoing a minor shoulder surgery, he had left ankle surgery in North Carolina today.

Kemp injured his ankle in late July after he slid awkwardly at home plate against the Nationals and when he came back, he looked like the Kemp of old. However, according to Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times via Kemp’s agent Dave Stewart, Kemp underwent successful surgery:

Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp underwent a left ankle operation Monday that will limit his off-season training program, according to his agent, Dave Stewart. Stewart said Kemp is expected to be ready for opening day. The procedure was performed in North Carolina by famed ankle specialist Robert Anderson. Kemp had torn cartilage removed from his ankle.

Injuries plagued Kemp’s 2013 season as he battled shoulder, hamstring and ankle injuries as the Dodgers were without him for a large portion of the season.

Kemp hit .270 with six home runs and 33 RBI in just 73 games and with four outfielders for three spots, there has been some speculation that the Dodgers could entertain offers for him.

Trying to find a positive in all the surgeries, Stewart discussed some of Kemp’s rehab to Hernandez:

But Stewart tried to find a positive in the setback, saying Kemp will be able to do the upper-body work he couldn’t do last winter. Kemp will also be able to strengthen his core and hamstrings, the agent said.

Hopefully Kemp can get back to the MVP level he was at back in 2011 as the Dodgers could use his bat in the middle of the lineup when the 2014 season gets underway in Australia.
