Dodgers News: Mattingly Confident In Patchwork Rotation

[new_royalslider id=”141″] The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 15-day disabled list, which stripped them of another starting pitcher; Josh Beckett being the other lost to injury.

The Dodgers are also without starter/reliever Paul Maholm, who underwent ACL surgery and will miss the remainder of the season. The injuries magnified the team’s decision to stand pat at the non-waiver trade deadline rather than include any of their top prospects in a trade for a frontline starter.

August brought a different story however, as the Dodgers traded for Kevin Correia and Roberto Hernandez. The veteran right-handers have combined to make three starts for the Dodgers with Correia set to fill in for Ryu on Tuesday.

Despite being without Beckett and Ryu, manager Don Mattingly expressed confidence in the current starting rotation, via Steve Dilbeck of the LA Times:

Not as long as they keep pitching the way they have,” Mattingly said. “We’ve gotten good outings, Kevin pitched good. Roberto has pitched good both times. So as long as guys keep pitching well, you don’t think about it too much. You keep doing that, and hopefully we don’t have to talk about it.”

The two new arrivals join Clayton Kershaw, who hasn’t lost since May 28, a surprisingly struggling Zack Greinke and a seemingly revitalized Dan Haren. Greinke is 0-2 in his last three starts and has failed to beat the Milwaukee Brewers in his two most recent outings.

Hernandez joined the Dodgers with a 6-8 record and the right-hander has gone six innings in both of his starts with the Boys in Blue. The 33 year old recorded five strikeouts in each start and allowed a combined three runs on six hits.

Correia arrived with an abysmal 5-13 record and 4.94 ERA. However, in his lone start with the Dodgers, Correia threw six strong innings and allowed just one run on four hits.

With the uncertainty surrounding the dates of Beckett’s and Ryu’s return, the Dodgers will need Correia and Hernandez to continue putting their best foot forward.
