Dodgers News: Mattingly Says Kemp’s Ankle Will Need More Time

The most important month of the season is just a day away and the Dodgers may have to continue their amazing run at the National League West title without one of their star outfielders.

Matt Kemp injured his ankle two Sundays ago on July 21 in an afternoon game that many Dodger fans hoped would just be a mild sprain, but Kemp did in fact land on the DL. While it was only supposed to be a short stint, Kemp has been seen limping around the clubhouse for several days.

According to Pedro Moura of the Orange County Register, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that Kemp’s recovery may take a little longer than they expected:

This is obviously unfortunate news for the Dodgers as they’ll be entering the most important month of the season without their center fielder. On a bright side, they’ve been pretty successful without him thus far and have three other capable outfielders to fill-in for Kemp while he’s sidelined.

In his limited action this season, Kemp has batted for an average of .263 with five home runs and 27 RBI’s and has been on the DL twice before with a hamstring and shoulder injury.

If the Dodgers keep pulling away and have  a comfortable lead in the NL West, then it would be a better idea to not rush Kemp back and make sure he’s 100 percent for a deep playoff run.
