Dodgers News: McCarthy to DL; Ryu Activated; Maeda Starts

Brandon McCarthy takes yet another trip to the disabled list after an apparent finger blister.

With Brandon McCarthy down on the 10-day disabled list, Hyun Jin Ryu has been activated to take his place. Brandon McCarthy has been in and out of health all year long but has been solid for the Dodgers when he’s in shape. He has been a good late rotation guy this season with an ERA of 3.84 over 86.2 innings pitched. However, over the last month, he has thrown 17.2 innings with ERA above 7. This raises heavy concern for the Dodgers as they make a push for a World Series title. All signs now point to a trade for a more consistent starter.

Hyun Jin Ryu is set to start Monday and is hoping to improve on his 4.21 ERA this season. Ryu has been down since just after the All-Star break with an injured foot. Suddenly, a lot of pressure has been put on Hyun Jin Ryu and Kenta Maeda. Kershaw, Wood, and Hill have been the main guys that represent the better 3 of the rotation while Ryu, Maeda, and McCarthy have been bouncing around in and out of either the bullpen or the DL. Now, with Kershaw and McCarthy both going under, Ryu and Maeda will have to step up and perform better than expected.

With Ryu starting Monday, that will push Maeda to Tuesday. Maeda has been very encouraging as of late. Although his on the year ERA is at 4.23, in the last month his ERA has been 3.05 over 20 innings. He has not been able to work late into games, throwing five innings in each of his last two starts. So if Maeda pitches very picky, it could put a lot of pressure on the Dodgers’ bullpen.

With the recent injuries to Dodgers’ starting pitching, it really heats up the trade talks for the Dodgers’. With Sonny Gray and Yu Darvish being the big names on the block, now is the time to make the move. Should be an interesting last few days before the trade deadline.

  1. Dodgers don’t play on Monday…. So is Ryu set for a Sunday start at home against Giants on Tuesday on road in Atlanta?
