Dodgers News: Miguel Olivo Signed, 15 Invited To Spring Training

Miguel OlivoThe Los Angeles Dodgers are busy in their pursuit of Japanese starter Masahiro Tanaka, but the organization announced they invited 15 players to Spring Training in three weeks.

Veteran catcher Miguel Olivo was signed to a minor league deal along with Griff Erickson and invited top prospects Joc Pederson, Zach Lee, Chris Reed and Ross Stripling. The Dodgers sent out a press release with the full list of 15 non-roster players that’ll be at Camelback Ranch very shortly:

1. JC Boscan, C  2. Sam Demel, RHP 3. Griff Erickson, C 4.  Carlos Frias, RHP 5. Brendan Harris, INF 6. Zach Lee, RHP  7. Daniel Moskos, LHP  8. Chris O’Brien, C 9. Miguel Olivo, C 10. Red Patterson, RHP 11. Joc Pederson, OF 12. Chris Reed, LHP 13. Clint Robinson, INF 14. Miguel Rojas, INF 15. Ross Stripling, RHP

Olivo and Erickson are the notable additions as everyone else is either a prospect or was signed to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training earlier in the off-season. The 12-year veteran Olivo played in only 33 games with the Miami Marlins before asking for his release after not playing in two weeks.

On the season, he had a triple slash of .203/.250/.392, but could pose healthy competition to incumbent backup catcher Tim Federowicz. Meanwhile, Miguel Rojas and Brendan Harris have a lot to prove as the Dodgers continue to search for a backup infielder and could be the in-house choices.

If the Dodgers are able to sign Tanaka, Lee would be showcasing himself for later years while Pederson will have a tough time breaking through the four outfield logjam at the big league level. Regardless, it’s clear that the organization wants to focus more on its prospects than aging veterans as they’ll use Spring Training to evaluate their progress.
