Dodgers News: Miguel Rojas Works With Mark McGwire On Improving Swing

With the Los Angeles Dodgers recent surge has come the emergence of utility infielder Miguel Rojas, who is making quite an impression in his rookie season.

Rojas spent eight years in the minor leagues before getting called up in June as the Dodgers were in search of infield help due to injuries.

Rojas has played spectacular defense and made an impressive diving catch in Wednesday’s game against the Cleveland Indians to rob Michael Brantley of a hit and RBI. It comes just two weeks after Rojas made a nice stop and throw to preserve Clayton Kershaw’s no-hitter.

For Rojas, defense hasn’t been the problem since his being promoted from the Minors, but his offense could use some improvement. With that in mind, Rojas has made adjustments to his swing under the direction of hitting coach Mark McGwire, according to Samantha Zuba of the LA Times:

I made a couple adjustments the last few days with the hitting coach [Mark McGwire], trying to simplify a little bit,” Rojas said after the game. “What I was doing was having a leg kick and a lot of movement when I was about to swing, but today I was able to put a good at-bat together and help myself to be calm and just put a short and quick swing on.”

Rojas is aware the Dodgers need him for defensive purposes more so than offensively and feels whatever he can contribute from the plate is a bonus:

I’m here to pick the ball up,” Rojas said. “That’s what the main thing for me is: to keep catching the ball and keep making those plays for the pitchers. We’ve got a great pitching staff, so they need those plays to be made. So I’m trying to keep focused on defense, and what I can do on offense is gonna be a plus.”

Signs of adjustment were seen Wednesday as Rojas went 2-for-3. The infielder Rojas has already made an impact and if he can impress offensively the way he has with his glove, it will make the Dodger lineup that much deeper.
