Dodgers News: MRI Reveals Inflammation In Yasiel Puig’s Shoulder

Yasiel PuigOne day after it was revealed Yasiel Puig had a flare up in his right shoulder, which resulted in a limited throwing program for the young right fielder. Puig dealt with similar inflammation through various stretches in the 2013 season and the team believes the energetic 23-year-old may have taken on too much, too soon prior to the start of spring training.

According to Ken Gurnick of Dodgers.com, the MRI confirmed the teams initial prognosis:

The MRI revealed no serious injury and he was diagnosed with a return of inflammation that cropped up sporadically last year.

Puig will continue with the limited throwing program for the foreseeable future as he looks to get ready for his first full big league spring training this season. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly acknowledged that Puig usually does things at full speed and hopefully this will make him take a step back.

While he may experience some discomfort when throwing, Gurnick reports the inflammation hasn’t affected Puig’s swing:

Whatever discomfort Puig feels in the right shoulder, however, hasn’t hampered his swing, as he andMatt Kemp took turns launching bombs during batting practice in Friday’s first full-squad workout.

The injury isn’t believed to be serious and given that Puig played with similar discomfort last season, he isn’t expected to be kept out of the lineup unless the injury worsens. Puig is coming off a rookie season where he finished second in the NL Rookie of The Year Award enters 2014 with high expectations. He hit .319 with 19 home runs and 42 RBIs in 2013 and manager Don Mattingly recently stated Puig may be anointed the team’s new leadoff hitter.

Getting Puig 100 percent for opening day is the Dodgers number one priority and it sounds like the shoulder issue is that big of a deal.
