Dodgers News: Colletti Says Team May Not Make A Trade

[new_royalslider id=”141″] With the Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly in search of a starting pitcher, Jon Lester of the Boston Red Sox was the latest to be linked to the Boys in Blue.

The report mentioned the Dodges and Red Sox have held discussions regarding Lester, though nothing appeared imminent. Prior to the Dodgers game with the San Francisco Giants on Saturday, general manager Ned Colletti addressed the likeliness of a trade, via ESPN LA’s Mark Saxon:

“You know what? We may not do anything,” Colletti said. “We’ve still got a club that’s solid, that still has upside to it, so I think there’s still more in this club. Have we won four in a row yet? I think there’s still a strong run in this club as it’s currently constituted. That said, we’ve been historically active in July and August, sometimes, and we’ll continue to see what else we can do.”

Making a move may prove challenging for the Dodgers as Colletti noted some of the sellers are within the same division:

It’s a very small market, and in our situation, some of the teams are in the NL West,” Colletti said. “In our case, it’s going to be a buck-and-a-half for a dollar.”

The Dodgers have a small group of prospects which they’ve said they’re unwilling to part with, however Colletti acknowledged it may be necessary in order to land a top-flight player:

For the elite major league player, sometimes [the cost is] two elites, sometimes three elites. We’re dealing in an elite environment.”

Considering how the series with the Giants has gone, the Dodgers may now be less-inclined to make a move prior to the non-waiver trade deadline.

In winning Saturday’s game, the Dodgers moved into first place in the National League West standings. At worst, they’ve already taken the series from their division rival and will travel back to Los Angeles in second place with a 0.5-game deficit.

With a win on Sunday, the Dodgers will move 1.5 games ahead of the Giants in the standings. Although Colletti downplayed the possibility of the Dodgers making a trade, his track record argues otherwise.

Colletti and the Dodgers have a history going through with a deal and carrying forward with another this season wouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
