Dodgers News: Nomar Garciaparra Joins Dodgers SportsNet LA Channel

Nomar Garciaparra Details about the Los Angeles Dodgers new Time Warner Cable channel in 2014 are still being finalized as their partnership with KCAL 9 and Fox Sports came to an end this past season.

The Dodgers already made the announcement that road broadcasters Steve Lyons and Eric Collins won’t be back in 2014 and Charley Steiner will take over for Collins. However, it sounds like the channel is adding another member to its broadcast team, this time a former Dodger according to Steve Dilbeck of the LA Times:

Nomar Garciaparra has been hired as a new commentator by the Dodgers, according to a person familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity.  Garciaparra is expected to do pre- and post-game commentary and be utilized on both the television and radio broadcasts. Roles are still being defined.

The LA native retried from baseball in 2010 and has since been with ESPN as a Baseball Tonight analyst and a lead analyst for both the College World Series and Little League World Series. Garciaparra spent three seasons with the Dodgers from 2006-2008, hitting .289 with 35 home runs and 180 RBI as injuries derailed his promising career.

Other candidates for an analyst position are former Dodgers Eric Karros and Orel Hershiser as both are currently with Fox  and ESPN respectively. It was revealed this past week that Time Warner hasn’t reached out to pay-TV providers like DirecTV, AT&T or Verizon Fios to name a few and subscriber rates could be as high as $5 per month.

Regardless, it looks like Time Warner wants to get the broadcast team in place quickly and adding Garciaparra to the broadcasts and in-studio analysis seems to be a step in the right direction.
