Dodgers News: Roberts Learned A Lot From Bochy

New Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was a player on two of Bruce Bochy’s San Francisco Giants teams. Those appearances came back in 2007 and 2008. He also played under Bochy in 2005 and 2006 when both were with the San Diego Padres. Roberts has learned a few things.

As Roberts takes over for his first full-time coaching gig, he hopes to use what he’s learned from Bochy in the hopes to help the Dodgers stave off the Giants in the National League West race. And, perhaps at the same time, win the head-to-head battle by being savvier.

ICYMI: Kershaw-Ellis Tandem Could Break Up

From Henry Schulman at the San Francisco Chronicle:

“I’ve definitely got a few things up my sleeve that he’s taught me, whether he knows it or not,” [manager Dave] Roberts said with a smile at a press availability Monday for all 15 Cactus League managers and general managers.

We’re all quite curious to find out what those “few things” up his sleeve could be, but I guess we’ll just have to find out when the rest of baseball — including Bochy, himself — find out. Until then, we’re going to have to leave it up to our imaginations when it comes to the Roberts-Bochy matchup.

But, if you’re thinking this is going to be some type of Roberts versus Bochy thing, think again:

However, Roberts is not intimidated by Bochy’s experience, saying, “Honestly, it’s not me versus Boch – fortunately. It’s Dodgers versus Giants.”

Roberts is right. At the end of the day, it’s very much just team versus team. The managers do have a major impact on some of the games, though, based on their lineup choices, strategy, and bullpen use. Then again, the players play. So we’ll see how their meetings head-to-head truly go.

Bochy knows all the tricks and nuances of managing, but Roberts is hoping that what he’s learned over a few years under Bochy might even the playing field. We’ll see how it unfolds all year, and this’ll be a very interesting battle to watch develop.

  1. I just wish Dave all the best. He was a class act as a player, and if he can beat the Giants regularly, he will become an LA Icon!

  2. Dave couldn’t learn from anyone better.  Bochy and Maddon are #1 and #2, with no one else really close.  Mike Matheny is creeping up and would join those two if he wins the NL Central again.  If nothing else the Dodgers will have a different attitude. Hopefully that will translate into more Wins on the field.
