Prior to Jimmy Rollins officially being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers as part of their offseason makeover, the veteran shortstop reached out to a member of the team he expected to soon join.

Knowing that the trade was likely to occur and thinking he would be playing alongside Dee Gordon up the middle, Rollins reached out to the second baseman with an eye on developing a relationship, according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne:

But he invited Dee — an infielder for the Dodgers, one of the teams rumored to be in the market for Rollins — to come hang out with him during the players’ association’s annual meeting in Orlando, Florida. I thought it would be a good opportunity to bond,” Rollins said. “And to help him learn about the business of baseball.”

The two would never wind up together in Los Angeles as Gordon was traded to the Miami Marlins in what was the first of a flurry of moves the Dodgers completed. Rollins has nonetheless continued to assume a leadership role since joining his new team.

Rollins led the comeback bid on Opening Day, hitting a go-ahead, three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Dodgers to a 6-3 win over the San Diego Padres.

Rollins was batting .227/.261/.545 with the one home run, two doubles and six RBIs heading into Sunday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. While he wasn’t able to work with Gordon, Rollins has successfully replaced him in the leadoff spot of the Dodgers’ lineup.
