Dodgers News: Ryu To Skip Next Rotation, Sore Shoulder

Hyun-Jin Ryu was scheduled to make his return yesterday for the first game of the series against the Cubs, but manger Dave Roberts has decided to skip his next two rotations as a “precaution”. During his last rehabilitation start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Ryu threw 90-mph for the first time in almost two years, contributing to a sore shoulder the following morning.

The lefty is still recovering from a season-ending surgery last May due to a damaged labrum and has not pitched this season. When spring training began, the Dodgers had planned on Ryu being in the starting rotation during the regular season. The team is now hoping that Ryu will make his return after two more starts in the minors. However, it is difficult to plan an on-time return from a shoulder surgery.

“We were thinking middle of June and now with this setback it pushes it back,” Roberts said. “It depends on how he feels. He could come back and say the soreness has completely dissipated and we’ll re-evaluate.”

Roberts has also indicated that Ryu’s shoulder is stable, and his return will depend on the level of discomfort while progressing with practice.

The Dodgers have depended on Ross Stripling, Mike Bolsinger and Julio Urias to fill their rotation. Dodgers called up Bolsinger after sending Stripling down to the minors last week. While Stripling conserves his pitches and Ryu is rehabilitating, The Dodgers have been using Bolsinger and Urias in their place.

Ryu has not given up on this season and continues his throwing program. He is planning to continue to keep his arm lose, practicing alongside the team. He is signed with the team through 2018, but can opt out early if he plays a combined 750 innings from the start of his career until 2017.
