Dodgers News: Ryu’s May Return Seen as ‘Unrealistic’

Remember when Hyun-jin Ryu gave a possible return date late in February and said he was aiming for May? Those were good days. The days now? Not so much. Earlier today, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that he does not expect the left-hander to pitch in a Cactus League game this spring.

So, when might Ryu pitch? Well, no one knows quite yet. Even though Ryu said he wants to return sometime in May, that doesn’t exactly mean that’s when he’s actually going to return. For now, it’s appearing that he won’t be ready until possibly June at this rate. And that’s not ideal right now.

ICYMI: Dodgers News: Scott Kazmir’s Missing Velocity

From Joey Kaufman, staff writer at the Orange County Register:

Earlier this month, Ryu had set a target of a May return date, but Roberts added that it was “unrealistic.”

“It’s aggressive,” Roberts said, “but you never know how things change.”

Ryu threw a bullpen session on Monday, and he is expected to appear back on the mound sometime later this week. Still, this isn’t exactly great news that’s floating out there right now. Hearing that Ryu’s possible May return date is now “unrealistic” does stick in your craw just a little bit.

With the mounting injuries among the rotation, notably to Brett Anderson and Alex Wood, and with Scott Kazmir’s diminishing velocity right now, it does seem like the Dodgers will need Hyun-jin Ryu more than ever.

It’s going to be interesting to watch how the Los Angeles Dodgers approach the return of Hyun-jin Ryu and what it could mean to their success throughout the season. He wants to be back by May, but now it appears as if that’s not going to actually happen. Just have to keep hoping and praying.
