Dodgers News: Scott Boras Talks Cuban Infielder Alexander Guerrero

NewDodgersNation_Store300x300[2]The Dodgers were rumored to be nearing a deal for Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero, but after he signed with super agent Scott Boras, all 30 teams were brought back into the bidding process.

Guerrero has worked out at the Dodgers Dominican Republic complex five or six times and with the Dodgers new ownership in place, they’ve placed a high priority on international scouting. Talking to Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times, Boras shed some light on the timetable of a Guerrero signing:

Boras hinted that Guerrero could be signed in the next couple of weeks. Asked if Guerrero would play winter ball in Latin America, Boras replied, That will be up to the team that signs him. The Dominican League doesn’t start until mid-October. We expect he will be signed before then.

Boras and the Dodgers have frosty relationship at best, but the recent signing of Hyun-Jin Ryu, a Boras client, could be an indication that things are getting better between the two sides.

Guerrero will likely play second base in the big leagues and with the Dodgers likely to decline the option on Mark Ellis’ contract, there’s a need for him.

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com has seen Guerrero work out in the Dominican Republic mentioned that he reminds him of Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler. However, Boras compared his client to another power-hitting second baseman:

By Boras’ estimate, Guerrero’s power is comparable to Dan Uggla’s.There are just a couple of major-league middle infielders in the free-agent market that have 10-home-run power, let alone 20-home-run power, which I think he has.

Along with the Dodgers, the Twins, Red Sox and Cubs had interest in Guerrero and it remains to be seen if another team has jumped into the sweepstakes. Negotiations between the Dodgers and Guerrero have been going on for quite some time and hopefully a resolution is nearing.
