Dodgers News: Scott Kazmir Dominates In Debut

In his regular season debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers, left-hander Scott Kazmir was absolutely sensational. He pitched six innings, threw just 75 pitches, and gave up only one hit to a San Diego Padres team that was outclassed and left befuddled. Kazmir was brilliant, and hopefully it’s a sign of things to come.

The only hit that Kazmir allowed was a one-out single in the bottom of the first inning to Cory Spangenberg. It was an infield hit that Chase Utley got to but couldn’t throw Spangenberg out in time on due to losing his footing and making a lackluster throw. That was the only baserunner Kazmir allowed all night before getting pulled after six innings.

From Andy McCullough, contact reporter for the Los Angeles Times:

“I did want to stay in the game,” Kazmir said. “But I understood the situation.” The relievers, he added, “really shut the door. It’s awesome to see when you’re a starter, and you come out of the game, to see those guys come in and punch tickets.”

The decision by manager Dave Roberts to pull Scott Kazmir after six innings was certainly an interesting one. Roberts attributed it to wanting to get some of the bullpen guys a little bit of work. And work they did. The bullpen hurled three shutout innings, giving up just one infield hit, and striking out six. They were sensational.

It was a dominant performance all-around for the pitching staff. Kazmir set the tone, and the bullpen picked it up from there. He generated easy out after easy out. No ball was ever hit hard against him. There were lazy fly balls, weak grounders, and punchouts. All in all, Scott Kazmir was everything the Dodgers could have hoped for in his debut.
