Dodgers News: Scott Van Slyke Recalled, Dee Gordon Optioned

While many believed the Dodgers would make a roster move to activate reliever Brian Wilson, they surprisingly sent down shortstop Dee Gordon and recalled Scott Van Slyke.

Van Slyke has been up and down with the big club most of the season, but can provide a nice big bat off the bench. Gordon was brought up to provide insurance for Hanley Ramirez as the Dodgers have enough utility players on the roster.

The Dodgers Twitter account announced the transaction this afternoon with the team in Philadelphia:

In his brief stint with the Dodgers, Dee had five hits in 14 at-bats, but had several issues in the field. When the Dodgers expand the roster in September, it’s likely that Gordon will be back in LA.

With the Dodgers this season, Van Slyke is hitting .242 with six home runs and 15 RBIs as he’ll provide insurance in the outfield and could give Adrian Gonzalez a rest sometimes at first base.

It’s clear that the Dodgers want Van Slyke’s power bat off the bench as in pinch hitting situations, he could be very useful going forward.
