Dodgers News: Search For Starting Pitching Depth Ongoing

The Los Angeles Dodgers have yet to play a meaningful game and they already appear to be in need of additional starting pitching. Brett Anderson, Mike Bolsinger, Brandon McCarthy and Joe Wieland are among the glut of pitchers were added in the offseason, yet there appears to be a necessity for more arms.

Hyun-Jin Ryu suffered a setback after throwing Sunday and is returning to Los Angeles for further evaluation of his troublesome left shoulder. Erik Bedard was diagnosed with a lat strain and is scheduled to undergo an MRI.

Talk of the Dodgers’ need to more pitchers has suddenly taken center stage, though Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi said the club has been searching for additional depth, via ESPN’s Mark Saxon:

We’ve been looking for starting pitching depth all offseason and that’s kind of continued into camp,” Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi said. “This is just a hard time to go out there and acquire starting pitching depth. We’re fielding calls from teams that are asking us about our starting pitching depth, so there aren’t a lot of starting pitching sellers right now.”

With Ryu all but guaranteed to begin the regular season on the disabled list, the Dodgers can press forward without needing a fifth starter until April 14; with April 25 the next date when a fifth pitcher would be needed.

While the health of the pitching staff has taken a hit, Bolsinger, Carlos Frias and Wieland are healthy and among the options to spot-start for the Dodgers in the first month of the regular season. Should the club look to the free agent market, a new name in Jhoulys Chacin was made available Sunday as the Colorado Rockies released the right-hander.
