Dodgers News: Sierra Deal Will Be Finalized Soon

In mid-January, it was reported that the Los Angeles Dodgers were close to a deal with Cuban right-hander Yaisel Sierra. A day later, a baseball executive referred to the deal as “absurd.” Now, we’re getting news that the deal will be finalized soon.

As the fans eagerly await the signing being made official, they’ll just have to live with knowing the Sierra is on the way but not exactly here yet. There are still mere formalities that must be gone through first in order to get him on the team and in the system.

From MLB Network Insider Jon Heyman’s (@JonHeyman) official Twitter account:

So, there you have it. The signing of Yaisel Sierra by the Los Angeles Dodgers will be made official “fairly soon” and it will be in the $30 million to $31 million range for the talented 25-year old Cuban right-hander.

If you’re wondering what the exact holdup is, it’s that Sierra is still trying to get the visa paperwork that will allow him to enter the United States so that he can eventually finalize the six-year contract with the team. It’s just legal stuff that’ll be ironed out soon.

The Dodgers hope that his stuff finally matures enough to allow him to become either a dominant reliever or a good starter. Sierra’s 6-foot-1, 170-pound frame is considered by all scouts to be athletic, and his arm action is touted as “clean.”

Sierra features a fastball that sits between 91-94, as well as a slider that has wipeout capabilities as a plus pitch. He also throws a changeup that’ll be used sparingly as a third offering. It’s possible that Sierra starts his career in Double-A or Triple-A.

At his age, the team is banking on the Cuban star to get to the big leagues fairly quickly and make an impact in whatever way that he can. It remains to be seen if that’ll happen, obviously, but it’s not a bad bet to make. He certainly has the potential.

  1. No such thing as too many arms. I am hoping the Dodgers keep spending for International talent until July as it is the one great way they can use their huge advantage in money… I would like to see them grab a couple of the young outfielders that grade out well also.

A very deep Farm System like they are building will help them trade for a specific strategic piece perhaps at the end of a year to get them to the WS… We can always hope. But you need the talent to trade.
