Dodgers News: Stan Kasten Discusses Don Mattingly’s Future With Team

A day after being named runner-up in the National League Manager of the Year vote, it looks as if Dodger manager Don Mattingly may be receiving a better reward for his accomplishments.

Mattingly led the Dodgers from a 30-42 record to an NL West title this past season and took them to Game 6 of the NLCS in his third year with the team. He was nearly fired back in June and didn’t receive the vote of confidence from the team that he expected, which he made clear in his press conference after the season.

According to Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times, Dodgers president Stan Kasten discussed Mattingly’s future with the team:

I hope and expect him to be the manager of the Dodgers for a long time, Kasten said.

Along with the expectations for the future, Kasten also talked about the miscommunication that came before Mattingly’s press conference:

It was a day of awkwardness and confusion that cleared up, literally, in about 24 hours, Kasten said. We take the lion’s share of the blame for whatever confusion resulted because of the timing and sequence of meetings that were beginning that afternoon.

Mattingly’s contractual option was guaranteed after the Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS, but at the press conference he made it clear that he didn’t want to return on a one-year deal next season. The 52-year-old did agree to honor his contract after taking such a hard stance. In the weeks since that press conference, it’s been revealed that the Dodgers are working on a multi-year deal with their manager.

Yesterday, Mattingly spoke about the contract talks on MLB Network during the Manager of the Year announcement and  said that the two sides were talking and that “they are going good”, a complete turnaround from the now infamous press conference.

It seems as if the Dodgers are trying their best to lock up Mattingly for the foreseeable future to try and lead the team to their first World Series since 1988.
