Dodgers News: Stephen Fife Optioned, Dee Gordon Recalled

As Dodgers fans await the news of Hanley Ramirez’s MRI, it sounds like management is preparing for the worst as they’ve optioned Stephen Fife to Triple-A and recalled shortstop Dee Gordon.

Gordon was held out of the lineup last night as a precaution as the Dodgers wait to see the results of Hanley’s MRI. Fife going down means that Chris Capuano will remain the fifth starter.

Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register first reported the transaction:

Ramirez had to leave yesterday afternoon’s game against the Cubs in the seventh inning after making a catch that resulted in him diving into the stands at Wrigley Field.

In 19 games with the Dodgers this season, Gordon hit just .175 with six stolen bases and he’ll provide insurance while Hanley’s status remains in limbo.

Arguably the Dodgers MVP this season, Hanley can ill-afford to miss a significant amount of time if the Dodgers are going to compete for a World Series this season.

It’ll be interesting if Don Mattingly starts Gordon on an everyday basis at short as the Dodgers will go with Punto this afternoon against the St. Louis Cardinals.
