Dodgers News: Team Agrees to Terms with Cuban OF Yordan Alvarez

The Los Angeles Dodgers have added another talent to their roster. The Dodgers have reportedly signed Cuban outfielder Yordan Alvarez on Wednesday. The deal is reported to be worth $2M, according to MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez.

The Dodgers have yet to announce the signing of the teenager, who is set to turn 19-years-old on June 27th. Alvarez will be joining the Dodgers other 19-year-old Julio Urias, who is expected to make his second Dodger Stadium start this week. Alvarez stands at 6-foot-4 and weighs 210-pounds.

Sanchez  gave insight to Alvarez abilities and also broke down the Dodgers international signings from last year.

From Jesse Sanchez, MLB.com:

He’s known as an athletic contact hitter who has shown some power. He hit .279 with a .342 on-base percentage and slugged .327 in two seasons for Las Tunas in Cuba’s Serie Nacional. He can also play first base.

During the last year, the Dodgers have signed several top prospects, including pitcher Yadier Alvarez, ranked No. 1 on MLB.com’s Top 30 International Prospects list for 2015; outfielder Yusniel Diaz for $15.5 million, outfielder Starling Heredia, ranked No. 9, for $2.6 million; infielder Ronny Brito, ranked No. 24, for $2 million; outfielder Christopher Arias for $500,000 and shortstop Oneal Cruz for $950,000.

The Dodgers also signed right-handed pitcher Ramon Rosso, outfielder Carlos Rincon and shortstop Damaso Marte Jr. from the Dominican Republic; Venezuelan shortstop Luis Rodriguez and second baseman Aldo Espinoza from Nicaragua. Marte, the son of former Major League pitcher Damaso Marte, signed for a $300,000 bonus.

The club later inked Cuban infielder Omar Estevez for $6 million.

The Dodgers managed to sign Alvarez before the deadline. MLB clubs won’t be able to sign international players for two weeks. The 2016-2017 international signing period will open up on July 2.

  1. Are we going to enter a team in the Cuban league? I guess not. They couldn’t compete.
