Dodgers News: Team Finalizes Deal With Yaisel Sierra

So, yesterday the news came out that the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cuban right-hander Yaisel Sierra were close to finalizing their deal. There were just some legal loopholes that they had to jump through before being able to move on with the deal and finalize it. Well, it’s officially done now.

The Dodgers and Sierra, per reports, finalized a deal that spans six years and $30 million. The soon-to-be 25-year old Cuban import stands 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds. No word yet on where Sierra will begin his career, whether it be Triple-A or Double-A, but the expectations attached to him are substantial.

ICYMI: Julio Urias Is Ready For Big Moments

Here’s what the Los Angeles Daily News had to say about the deal:

Not subject to international bonus pool limits, Sierra projects to begin the season in the minor leagues with the possibility of becoming a September call-up. It is believed Sierra will begin the season in the bullpen in the minors and work his way up to being a starter.

There’s some hope that Sierra is able to turn into a dominant late inning reliever, or even a starter who can be a middle-to-end-of-the-rotation type of guy. There’s a lot to love about Sierra, even if you don’t know all that much about him. His frame, stuff, and potential are all there.

Finally, there was this snippet about why you can be excited about him:

Scouts have praised Sierra’s savvy on the mound and his smooth, overhand delivery, but he has struggled to pitch deep into games.

The fact that Sierra has been unable to really pitch deep into games is a little concerning, but it’s not a deal-breaker by any stretch of the imagination. He’s got the quality stuff — his fastball and slider both have plus potential — to at least help the team in a variety of ways.

There’s no guarantee that the talented righty ever pans out, but there is a lot of hope that he does. If he does, then the Dodgers will have a great talent signed through his prime for great value and great production. And that should not be bemoaned.

The Los Angeles Dodgers today announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Yaisel Sierra to a six-year contract.

Sierra, 24, pitched five seasons in Cuba’s Serie Nacional with Holguin (2010-14) and Sancti Spiritus (2012), going 16-21 with 25 saves and a 4.23 ERA in 131 games (25 starts). Sierra, who was ranked No. 13 on Baseball America’s Top 20 Cuban prospects list, pitched for the country’s gold-medal winning national team at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games.

To create room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers placed right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas (rib resection surgery) on the 60-day disabled list.
