Dodgers News: Team Has 2nd Best Farm System, per ESPN

Today over at ESPN, senior writer Keith Law released his Top Farm System Rankings for 2016. In there, he ranks all 30 teams from first to last based on the strength of their minor league system and the prospects that they have. The Los Angeles Dodgers came in second.

The only team that was higher than the Dodgers was the Atlanta Braves, a team built through a few trades with an Arizona Diamondbacks team that was completely clueless half the time. The Diamondbacks came in ranked 24th by Law, as an aside.

ICYMI: Team Has 3rd Ranked Offense, per USA Today

From the mouth, err fingers, of Keith Law about the Dodgers and their system:

You can say that they bought this farm-system ranking, and you’d be right, and I don’t think they’d particularly care. However, that doesn’t do justice to the successful draft picks in 2013 and 2014 that line their top 10 around the various high-dollar Cuban signings (and that one Mexican lefty named Urias).

Law is correct about several things. First, the Dodgers did draft extremely well in 2013 and 2014. Players like Cody Bellinger, Jacob Rhame, Jose De Leon, Chris Anderson, Grant Holmes, Alex Verdugo, and several others came out of those two drafts. The depth they created with just them alone is important.

Secondly, Law also correctly notes that the Dodgers have filled in around the edges with high-priced Cuban talent and the uber-talented lefty Julio Urias. It’s given them a base that most other teams would be envious of, and that’s something you have to praise the organization and front office for doing.

If the Dodgers hit a home run with the 2015 Draft like they did with the 2013 and 2014 editions, then they could take over the top spot on that list for next season. They have that ability. For now, be happy the team has all this young talent. It’s a lot better than the Los Angeles Angels (#30) are doing right now.

  1. Who did that international prospect decide to sin with? I can’t remember his name, but he was supposed to make a decision today.
