Much of the trade rumors the Los Angeles Dodgers have been mentioned in linked them to starting pitchers David Price and Jon Lester.

Despite the persistent rumors, general manager Ned Colletti recently stated there was a chance the Dodgers would refrain from completing any deals due to a small trade market. However, the Dodgers have come to terms to acquire Darwin Barney from the Chicago Cubs, according to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish:

Barney, who was in his fifth season with the Cubs, was designated for assignment July 22 when the team added Emilio Bonifacio to the roster. Barney is capable of playing both second base and shortstop, though has primarily served as a second baseman.

The 28-year-old is a career .244 hitter that is regarded more for his bat, than glove. Barney won a Gold Glove in 2012 behind tying the single-season record of not recording an error in 141 consecutive games.

This season, Barney is hitting .230 and has a .265 OBP in 72 games. Barney will add to the Dodgers’ infield depth and gives the team an option to spell Dee Gordon, who has played in 100 of the Dodgers’ 106 games this season.

It has not yet been reported who the Dodgers will send to the Cubs in exchange for Barney.

  1. Darwin! Are you kidding me??? We need a replacement for Dan Haren not another .230 batter!

  2. Great move! 162 games at 165 lbs. Gordon changes the game more than his numbers. Good to have backup that hits just less than 15mm players. Btw, Hanley, my favorite Dodger, moves like Jeter.
