Dodgers News: Front Office Trying To Blend Youth With Winning

There’s a balance that teams want to find — almost harmonic, if you will — between a roster with youthful players and a roster that has a chance to win a world championship. As of right now, the Los Angeles Dodgers are trying to become one of several teams that successfully pulls that balance off.

While there’s not a ton of youth on the roster just from an actual first-glance standpoint, you have to remember that two of their most youthful players — Corey Seager and Joc Pederson — play two of the most important positions on the field, shortstop and center field. And it matters in roster flexibility.

From Ken Gurnick over at MLB dot com:

“One of our big goals last year was to find ways to improve the farm system, ultimately to get younger and create roster flexibility, and having good young players is the single most important factor,” [general manager Farhan Zaidi] said.

In a lot of ways, the Dodgers are trying to create what the New York Yankees created nearly 20 years ago with the influx of talent in the form of Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Andy Pettitte, and Mariano Rivera. They each played vital roles in the new dynastic Yankees. The Dodgers hope to create the same.

While it’s hard to sit here and compare some Dodgers prospects to a few of the best players at their positions in history, you have to remember that Los Angeles still has the veteran help around them to ease the burden of the youngsters so that the youthful ones won’t have to do it all alone.

Even Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig could be considered a veteran while also still being considered a youngster. And he fits into their long-term plan while also fitting into the plan for now. Figuring out the mix of youth and veterans and winning is a tough thing, but this team seems poised to make a run at it.

Whether that ends in the city’s first World Series championship since 1988 is up to how they play throughout the year, but the wheels are in motion. With several more prospects in the pipeline along the way, this might not just be a one-off thing. The Dodgers are here to stay.
