Dodgers News: Tulowitzki Intends To Discuss Home Run Derby With Puig

[new_royalslider id=”175″] Yasiel Puig has not hit a home run since May 28 — 33 games and counting entering Friday. He’s hit 11 home runs on the season; eight of which came during a record month of May.

Despite the drought, Puig has repeatedly expressed interest in participating in the upcoming Home Run Derby. Whether or not that will come to fruition is dependent on the captain of the National League team and Colorado Rockies shortstop, Troy Tulowitzki inviting Puig to represent the NL.

Tulowitzki has already extended an invitation to Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, who accepted, and Puig continues to standby. With the Dodgers set to play the second of a four-game series against the Rockies, Tulowitzki intends to use the opportunity to discuss the Derby with Puig, according to Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times:

I’ve seen his BP a couple times. He’s definitely on my list. I’ll probably talk to him here in this series, first of all, see if he’s interested, which, hopefully, he is and we’ll go from there.”

Tulowitzki wouldn’t commit to definitely adding Puig to the NL team, but did say the Dodger right fielder is near the top of candidates:

He’s someone that has a good chance. I’m not going to sit here and say he’s one of the guys I’m going to select, but he’s right up there with the top.”

Puig’s 11 home runs ranks him tied for 28th in the NL, while Stanton and Tulowitzki lead the league with 21 and 18, respectively. Manager Don Mattingly gave Puig his support and stated he believed he would do well in the event.

Whether or not Puig receives the invitation he’s seemingly been awaiting, he may be nonetheless bound for Minneapolis. Fan voting for the All-Star game ended Thursday, but the most recent update released earlier in the week had Puig ranked third among NL outfielders.

  1. Puig hasn’t hit for power since he hurt his hip, most of his hits have been grounders, witch is an improvement from when he was killing worms
