Dodgers News: Vin Scully To Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

The word “icon” gets tossed around a lot these days, but Vin Scully truly is iconic. The 88-year old has been a fixture with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the past 66 seasons. That span of time ranks as the longest any single broadcaster has spent with any single team in professional sports history. He is assuredly an icon.

On February 25, Scully is going to be honored at the Los Angeles Sports Awards with a Lifetime Achievement Award for all his service. Scully will actually be the first-ever recipient of the award.

The greater Los Angeles area is no stranger to great personalities and announcers. Besides Scully, notable voices like Chick Hearn (Lakers), Ralph Lawler (Clippers), Bob Miller (Kings), Dick Enberg (Angels), and Jaime Jarrín (Dodgers) have graced the airwaves for as long as we can remember. They are the voices of our childhood. The voices from which we are able to feel the game as if we were ourselves there in attendance.

Scully is Renaissance Man in his field. He knows everything about everything because he was most certainly there when it actually happened. The legend is entering his 67th and final season with the Dodgers, and it’s fair to say he hasn’t skipped a beat in the broadcast booth.

The award ceremony will be televised by Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket at a date and air time to be determined.

Congratulations, Vin! You have most certainly earned it.

LOS ANGELES (January 15, 2016) – Los Angeles Dodgers Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully will be honored as the first-ever recipient of the L.A. Sports Council’s “Lifetime Achievement Award” during the 11th Annual LA Sports Awards, which will be held on Thursday, February 25 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Widely regarded as the greatest baseball announcer of all-time, Scully has been with the team since its days in Brooklyn. The upcoming season will be Vin’s 67th and final season with the Dodgers, the longest time any broadcaster has been with a single team in professional sports history.

“I can’t think of a person more deserving of this recognition,” said Sports Council President David Simon. “Even more remarkable than his longevity is the consistently high quality and integrity his announcing has represented over the years.”

For generations of Southern California baseball fans, Scully’s dulcet voice, lyrically descriptive style, and signature introduction to Dodger games — “It’s time for Dodger baseball!” — have provided the soundtrack of summer.

During his legendary career he has been behind the microphone for many of the game’s most iconic moments, including 25 World Series, three perfect games, 19 no-hitters and Dodger Kirk Gibson’s famous walk-off home run in the 1988 World Series.

In 1982, Scully was inducted into the broadcaster’s wing of Baseball’s Hall of Fame as winner of the Ford C. Frick Award.

The LA Sports Awards are presented annually by the Sports Council to celebrate the greatest moments of the year in sports in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. The ceremony will be televised by Fox Sports West/Prime Ticket (air dates TBA).

  1. Due to Ownership GREED it looks like, and is an absolute travesty that longtime (FAITHFUL) Dodger fans won’t be able to view this much deserved event on any other network than TWC!!
