Dodgers News: Walker Buehler Transitioning to Bullpen for Call-Up

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ top prospect Walker Buehler made his official switch to the bullpen for the Oklahoma City Dodgers, the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate.

This is no cause for concern and it is not meant to be a permanent move. The Dodgers have planned on moving Walker Buehler to the bullpen for the rest of this season in hopes that he can make it up to the big league team in 2017, as a member of the Los Angeles bullpen.

Eric Stephen of True Blue LA first reported yesterday of Buehler’s switch to the bullpen for Oklahoma City:

Buehler did in fact make his relief appearance for the Oklahoma City Dodgers last night, but he did not make it through the two innings he was scheduled to pitch.

He only managed to get through 1 1/3 innings, giving up three rubs on two hits and a walk. He managed to strike out two of the four outs he collected, but was knocked around. His earned run average at Triple-A is a whopping 6.35 but that is a little deceiving as a large chunk of the runs he has given up came in his first start, where he did not make it out of the first inning.

The Dodgers are hoping to get Buehler some innings in Los Angeles this season to see if he is capable of handling a possible trip to the postseason as a member of a very good Dodger bullpen.

  1. Not sure there’s room for him at this point, or if he’s even needed. I mean, who would he replace? Fields? Maybe.

    1. He is transitioning to the bullpen in preparation for the Fall call-ups, when MLB teams can expand their rosters to 40 players and he can help leading up to the Playoffs.

  2. Nathan you are right, there’s no place to put him and he isn’t really needed in the bullpen. I think its more about giving him a taste of the bigs for next year and maybe insur for this year. Him and others will obviously be called up when rosters expand but any of those call ups would have to really impress to make it on the playoff roster, in my opinion.

    1. I think he will be called up in Sept and provide insurance for the playoffs in case one of our relievers gets injured.
