10:09 a.m.: For those wondering what we could see out of Puig, I dug up some stats from Vladimir Guerrero’s rookie season, and the following year. Really, you have to like what you see. At the bottom of the table are Guerrero’s career numbers in 16 Major League seasons. Again, this is the very best case scenario for Puig.

9:42 a.m.: In allowing myself to get ahead a bit, I thought that it was really cool to think about a lineup featuring Dee Gordon and Yasel Puig en route to Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier. The foursome could be a staple in the Dodgers lineup for years to come as the quartet is guaranteed at least four years.

9:27 a.m.: Knobler’s write up about Puig can be viewed on CBS’ website.

He points out that Puig’s power called upon interest from half a dozen clubs. The initial reaction across the International market is that Yasel will get more guaranteed money than Jorge Soler and Yoenis Cespedes. Both players received much more publicity than Puig.

Scouts are impressed by what they have seen of Puig. There were some concerns though, which were about his conditioning. He didn’t homer on his first day working out in Mexico. He tired easily and blamed it on the high altitude of Mexico City, which is notorious for such feat as their soccer team has been known to wear it’s opponents down in nearby Estadio Azteca.

Common belief is that Puig will take longer to come around that Cespedes did to playing in America.

Puig worked out for scouts representing the Yankees, Phillies, White Sox, and Dodgers.

Earlier we posted Knobler’s tweet mentioning comparisons to perhaps Vladimir Guerrero. The article says that he is no Giancarlo Stanton or Bryce Harper, but, he’s close.

9:22 a.m.: Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes passes on a note about Puig’s contract and prospects for playing from the Dodgers this season. WARNING: It is in Spanish. I will translate the important part here:

Puig’s contract with the Dodgers should be completed on Friday. The kid could play in the Major Leagues this year, perhaps in time to help in the chase for the playoffs and World Series. We are also informed that the agreement includes some clauses that permit Puig to declare himself a free agent after the fourth season.

Also mentioned in the article is that Puig is the Cuban National Team’s fastest player. Cespedes is pretty fast too.

Interesting. They must have loved what they saw in tapes. It seems as if at worst the Dodgers are getting themselves a lesser version of Yoenis Cespedes, but could very well wind up with a superstar.

Wow, so at the very worst, Matt Kemp will outlive Puig’s stay as a Dodger. The contract will take Yasel to age 28. He will make roughly about $6 million per season.

Bill Shaikin shares a scary comment, but, we can confide that Puig is no Schmidt.

8:00 a.m.: The Dodgers whiffed on Jorge Soler, but perhaps it was because they were readying themselves for somebody bigger: Yasel Puig, which is pronounced pweeg.

According to MLB.com’s Jorge Sanchez the Dodgers have agreed to sign the Cuban outfielder to a multi-year contract worth more than $40 million. The move resumes what was a strong relationship between the Dodgers and Latin America.

What exactly are they getting with Puig?

Yasel is very good, but also quite raw. He possesses a great deal of both speed and power. He is 6’3″, weighs 210 lbs, and will play in the outfield, presumably in left field alongside Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier for many years to come. He will begin in the Minor Leagues as he trains hard to ready himself for The Show.

The news breaks two days after Puig was granted free agency. It also comes four days before baseball’s collective bargaining agreement imposes spending restrictions on teams. Beginning on July 2 teams will work with a $2.9 million annual budget for international prospects.

So now what you are waiting for, the comparisons. He gets more money than Soler because he’s more polished than Jorge. However, he still has some work before he gets to the level of Yoenis Cespedes. Remember him? He his that walk-off three-run homer to sink the Dodgers last week.

If we just signed a younger Cespedes, or perhaps better, than this is a steal of a deal. Of course, details are still trickling in. It looks as if the Dodgers submitted a very aggressive bid to make sure that they would top both Chicago franchises.

Puig recently established temporary residency in Mexico to prepare for this move.

A member of the Cuban National Team, Puig hit .330 with 17 home runs and 78 RBIs for Cienfuegos in the 2010 season. He would not play again after that as he was disciplined for attempting to defect.

Cespedes got $36 million across four years with the A’s in February, while Soler signed a 9-year/$30 million contract with the Cubs earlier this month.
