Dodgers News: Yasiel Puig Has Reckless Driving Charges Dropped

Yasiel PuigLos Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig has had a busy off-season on and off the field. Puig has hosted two clinics at Dodger Stadium for Little Leaguers around the area, but was also booked on his second reckless driving charge in the last eight months.

The 23-year-old outfielder was driving 110 mph in a 70 mph zone in Alligator Alley in Florida with his mom and cousin in the car. Video of his arrest surfaced on the internet, but it sounds like the charges were dropped according to TMZ Sports:

Seems the cop in the Yasiel Puig case overreacted when he said the Dodgers star could’ve killed his mom on a FL highway … because officials have now dropped the reckless driving charge saying Puig is nothing more than a common speeder, TMZ Sports has learned.

The video showed Puig being apologetic about speeding with his mom in the car and was cooperative with the cop. Dodgers president Stan Kasten and GM Ned Colletti both stated several times that they spoke to him about the severity of the situation and that Puig himself wanted to release a public statement.

In his rookie season with the Dodgers, Puig hit .319 with 19 home runs and 42 RBI while finishing second in the Rookie of the Year voting. While he dazzled in the field, Puig also had some growing pains as he overthrew cut off men, ran into outs on the base paths and rubbed people the wrong way with his bat flips.

Via Marisa Kendall of News Press, here’s some of the reasons why the charges were dropped:

Puig was not weaving in and out of traffic, he did not lose control of his vehicle, he didn’t cause other motorists to brake or make evasive maneuvers, and he was sober and had a valid Florida driver’s license, according to a memorandum released by the state attorney’s office.

Regardless, the Dodgers and Dodger fans love the energy and excitement he brings to the team and with the charges dropped hopefully he can focus solely on the 2014 season.
