Dodgers News: Yasiel Puig Named National League Player Of The Week

[new_royalslider id=”13″] Though the Los Angeles Dodgers went just 3-3 this past week, they had a big week from their right fielder.

Yasiel Puig was 8-for-23 with three doubles and three home runs in six games and was in the midst of a 16-game hit streak that was snapped on Sunday. He also held an eight-game RBI and extra-base hit streak that tied the Dodgers franchise record.

According to the Dodgers official Twitter account, Puig received an honor after this strong showing:

It is the second time Puig has taken home the honor in his career, with the last time being his first week in the big leagues last June. The right fielder shares the honor this week with Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock, who had a huge series against the Dodgers this past weekend.

In the month of May, Puig is hitting .385 with six home runs and 20 RBIs in 16 games. Along with the hitting, the sophomore star has been more patient at the plate, resulting in 10 walks and a .474 on-base percentage. His patience at the plate has been praised by manager Don Mattingly and has been the biggest reason he has avoided any slumps since his slow start. If Puig can continue this pace, he will garner consideration for NL Player of the Month. Last season, the right-handed slugger was named Player and Rookie of the Month in his first month. Also, it was revealed that Puig had some big goals for himself this season, telling hitting coach Mark McGwire that he wanted to win the NL MVP.

The way the 23-year-old is playing so far, that goal could become a reality for Puig and the Dodgers.
