Dodgers – Padres Opening Day Live Game Thread

Clayton Kershaw will be on the mound for his sixth straight opening day start as the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the San Diego Padres on a glorious April afternoon to kickoff the season. The lineup was released earlier today, and it features Chase Utley in the leadoff spot if you can believe that.

The offense will be facing off against Padres right-hander Tyson Ross. Ross went 10-12 with a 3.26 ERA last season while striking out 212 batters in 196.0 innings. He did walk 84, though, which led the league. Since coming over to the Padres, Ross has a 3.07 ERA and 526 strikeouts in 516.2 innings.

The game is being broadcast on Time Warner Cable SportsNet LA. It’s also being broadcast on ESPN, but it will be blacked out on ESPN if you live in the Los Angeles area. The game will be broadcast on the radio by 570 LA Sports. In the infamous words of one Vincent Edward Scully, “IT’S TIME FOR DODGER BASEBALL!”

FIRST INNING

The first at-bat of the 2016 season is a leadoff double for Chase Utley. Not a bad way to get things started. And then Corey Seager doubles in Chase Utley for the Dodgers’ first run of the season! Just two batters in, and it’s 1-0! Justin Turner hits a ball to the right side, and he moves Seager to third and is retired at first. One out, runner on third for Adrian Gonzalez. And, what does Gonzalez do? Well, he drives in Seager with a single to center field. 2-0 Dodgers! Yasiel Puig then goes down on strikes for the second out, and then so does Carl Crawford to end the top of the first. But the Dodgers strike for two runs on three hits. What a start. Kershaw is on the mound in a moment!

Clayton Kershaw strikes out Jon Jay to start the game, and then he gets Derek Norris to fly out to right field where Yasiel Puig uses TWO HANDS to secure the ball. It’s a 1-2-3 inning for Kershaw as he gets Matt Kemp to groundout to Corey Seager, and we head to the second with Los Angeles on top.

SECOND INNING: DODGERS LEAD 2-0

1-2-3 inning for Tyson Ross as he strikes out Joc Pederson, gets A.J. Ellis to fly out to right, and sits Clayton Kershaw down on a grounder.

HIGHLIGHT

Kershaw gets a strikeout and groundout to start the frame, but then walks Solarte with two outs before getting Upton to line out to Seager at shortstop. We head to the third, Dodgers leading.

THIRD INNING: DODGERS LEAD 3-0

Chase Utley leads off the third by promptly getting hit by a pitch, but Corey Seager then goes down on a check-swing third strike. Justin Turner doubles down the left field line, and Utley races all the way home and tries to slide in under the tag but gets tagged out for the second out. You have to love the aggressiveness even if it resulted in an out! Adrian Gonzalez then singles in Turner with another RBI single to center field! 3-0! Gonzalez then advances to second on a wild pitch. Puig then turns what was a bad plate appearance into a great one by walking after getting into an early hole. Runners on first and second with two outs for Carl Crawford. Unfortunately, Crawford then grounds into a force out to end the top of the third, but Los Angeles tacks on another run to make it 3-0.

Kershaw retires the first two batters of the third on a grounder and a strikeout before Jon Jay breaks up the no-hitter with a single to left field. However, Kershaw gets Norris to fly out to left to end the inning. We head to the fourth.

FOURTH INNING: DODGERS LEAD 3-0

Pederson rips a ball to right field, but it’s right into the shift and he’s thrown out at first. A.J. Ellis then strikes out, and then Clayton Kershaw grounds out to the catcher for a 1-2-3 inning. Bottom half coming up!

1-2-3 inning for Kershaw as he strikes out two batters. He’s in a groove, man.

FIFTH INNING: DODGERS LEAD 3-0

Los Angeles goes down in order to start the frame. Utley, Seager, and Turner all make outs as we head to the bottom half.

Fantastic play by Turner at third to get Solarte as the first out in the inning. Flat out speared a line drive. Kershaw then strikes out the next two batters to give him seven strikeouts through five innings. He’s just ridiculous.

SIXTH INNING: DODGERS LEAD 3-0

Adrian Gonzalez grounds directly into the shift to start off the sixth, and then Yasiel Puig gets hit on the elbow and sprints to first base. Crawford then beats out an infield single, so there’s runners on first and second with one out for Joc Pederson. Pederson doubles down the right field line, and it’s 4-0! Runners on second and third with one out now. A.J. Ellis then chops a single beyond the pulled in infield, and it’s now 6-0 after two runs score! This one is officially turning into somewhat of a laugher. And then Clayton Kershaw singles to put runners on first and second with one out. That’s all she wrote for Tyson Ross on opening day. Utley then singles to right field, and Ellis scores after Kemp misplays it. 7-0! Corey Seager then drives in Clayton Kershaw from third with a sac fly to make it 8-0. Justin Turner strikes out to end the frame, but the Dodgers bat around and tack on 5 more runs.

1-2-3 inning for Kershaw, and that’s 10 in a row set down by him. We head to the seventh, and this one seems slightly over.

SEVENTH INNING: DODGERS LEAD 8-0

Adrian Gonzalez with a leadoff walk, and then Yasiel Puig bounces a ball up the middle for a hit. Everyone who has batted for the Dodgers has a hit now. Incredible. Runners on first and second with no one out. Trayce Thompson, who came in for Carl Crawford, is now up to hit. What does Thompson do? Doubles to make it 9-0. This is a rout. Second and third with nobody out now. Pederson goes down swinging for the first out. A.J. Ellis then walks to load the bases with one out for Clayton Kershaw. He puts together a fantastic at-bat, but still strikes out for the second out. Utley up now. Utley singles to right and drives in two runs! It’s now 11-0! Runners on the corners with two outs now. A grounder to first ends the inning, but the Dodgers add three more runs. This one’s all over except the shouting. Oh, TIME TO STRETCH!

Kershaw strikes out Kemp, the lefty’s eighth strikeout of the day. Then Myers flies out to center for the second out. That’s 12 in a row retired by Kershaw. He then sets down Ramirez with a strikeout, his ninth of the day. That ties his career-high for strikeouts on an opening day. We go to the eighth.

EIGHTH INNING: DODGERS LEAD 11-0

Justin Turner with a leadoff double, and then Adrian Gonzalez with ANOTHER RBI single up the middle. 12-0 now! Wild pitch sends Gonzalez down to second. Puig then triples in Gonzalez to make it 13-0, and the ball gets away on the throw to third! Puig races home to make it 14-0! My god this is insane. Trayce Thompson then walked. Joc Pederson doubles to right-center, and now there’s runners on second and third with no one out. A.J. Ellis grounds out, but a run scores. And it’s now 15-0. Lol. After a popout to second, Ramirez makes a fantastic play at shortstop to get Utley at first. We head to the bottom of the eighth, and it’s now 15-0 Dodgers.

Louis Coleman is on to pitch now, and Kershaw’s day is over. He gives up a leadoff double. The Artist Formerly Known As B.J. Upton flies out to center for the first out. Spangenberg then grounds out to Utley for the second out, but Solarte moves to third on the groundout. Jabari Blash is up now with two outs, and he works a full count walk to put runners on the corners with two outs. Coleman then gets Jay to pop out to Scott Van Slyke at first base to end the eighth. One more inning to go!

NINTH INNING: DODGERS LEAD 15-0

Los Angeles goes down in order in the ninth, which is kinda funny. Three outs to go!

Yimi Garcia in here to pitch in the ninth. Just has to avoid the worst collapse in MLB history. He fans Derek Norris. Travis Janikowski with a bloop one-out single. Wil Myers then singles up the middle to give the Padres runners on the corners with one out. A popup to first base is the second out. One out away from victory. Garcia gets Solarte to fly out to left for the final out, and the Dodgers win! A shutout victory! Pure domination!

FINAL SCORE: DODGERS 15, PADRES 0

  1. That’s all they get to advertise on here. Soft porn. Pretty sad for a Dodgers fan website. Cuz I’m sure nobody under 18 comes on here.
