As expected with his presence in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ clubhouse on Tuesday, the team announced prior to Wednesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants Chris Heisey was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City. To clear room for Heisey on the 25-man roster, the Dodgers optioned Adam Liberatore to Triple-A.

The Dodgers acquired Hesiey from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for pitcher Matt Magill on Dec. 2 in a move that seemed perplexing at the time given the Dodgers’ logjam in the outfield. Heisey hit a lowly .100 in 50 at-bats during Spring Training and has been told the team has a plan for him.

Since beginning the season with the Oklahoma City Dodgers, Heisey was batting .257/.350/.629 with a team-high four home runs, seven RBIs and nine runs scored. While this move may come as a surprise upon first glance, it seems as if the Dodgers intend to go with an all right-handed outfield Wednesday with Madison Bumgarner on the mound.

Additionally, it gives Joc Pederson a night of rest — his first of the season. Although a majority of Heisey’s innings have come in left field, he can play all outfield three positions. However, Heisey will likely only be with the club for Wednesday’s game as the Dodgers are expected to call up a pitcher for a spot start on Thursday.

Liberatore made his third appearance with the Dodgers during Tuesday’s loss and allowed his fist hit in 4.1 innings. He also recorded four strikeouts in his brief stint without issuing a walk. The 27-year-old left-hander was also impressive during Spring Training, however being that the Dodgers also have lefties J.P. Howell and Paco Rodriguez, and that Liberatore has options remaining, he figures to spend plenty of time with the OKC Dodgers this season.

  1. Dumb move. Play Guerrero in LF, SVS in right and Puig in CF…Heisey has little chance against the Mad Bum..Liberatore got RH’s out as well as leftys….send Hatcher down instead
