Dodgers Rumors: Could The Phillies Trade Chase Utley Home To LA?

The Dodgers are on the verge of trading for reliever Carlos Marmol as it’s no secret that general manager Ned Colletti and president Stan Kasten are trying to improve the team.

While it’s been a struggle for most of the season, the Dodgers are only four games out of first place and embark on a nine-game road trip tomorrow in Colorado.

However, after making the statement that they want All-Stars at every position and Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com speculates they could trade for a second baseman:

“Word going around the game is that the Dodgers could have interest in Chase Utley, the longtime Phillies star who in his younger days starred at UCLA and before that at Long Beach (Calif.) Polytechnic High.”

Utley and the Phillies just lost three of four to the Dodgers as Utley hit three home runs in the four games. While he’s battled injury the past few season, Utley would be another big bat to be inserted into the Dodgers lineup.

The biggest hurdle in acquiring Utley would be Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro admitting that his team is out of contention and that he should move the All-Star second baseman.

Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis has been solid all season, but it’s a no brainer to go after Utley if he’s eventually put on the market.

Even if the Phillies don’t make him available for trade, Utley is a player the Dodgers could sign in the off-season as his contract will expire after the season.

Seems counter-intuitive. I really, really hope the Dodgers don’t trade for Marmol.
