Dodgers Rumors: Diamondbacks Show Interest In Howie Kendrick

Howie Kendrick had a solid season for the Dodgers last year, but the front office has recently said that the club will likely stay put with the current second base options that they have, specifically Chase Utley and Kike Hernandez.

Maybe the team’s stance will change as the offseason continues and Kendrick’s price tag naturally falls, but an NL West rival might swoop him up before then. According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Arizona Diamondbacks have inquired on the free agent second baseman

One obstacle for another team signing Kendrick is that they would have to surrender a draft pick to the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks already surrendered their first round pick to L.A. after signing Greinke, and would have to surrender their second round pick if they sign Kendrick. Therefore, a deal seems unlikely.

The draft pick situation may also be the reason why the Dodgers haven’t expressed much interest in bringing back Kendrick even though he performed well last season. They must feel they can replace his production and get a draft pick in return by letting Kendrick sign elsewhere. Or maybe they figure they can get him back at the price they want simply by waiting and letting the market thin out.

Or maybe they figure they can get him back at the price they want simply by waiting and letting the market thin out…….True but that could backfire on the team especially if the versatility of Kiki is needed elsewhere in the line up forcing Chase to play more which is fine with his D but sucks big time with his lack of offense…. The team traded away their best 2nd base prospect in Peralta so no one in the minors ready and able to fill that need…

  2. GregoryDuncanMclean It was Jose Peraza that was traded away and in said trade, the Dodgers netted second basemen Micah Johnson and also have Austin Barnes as a 2016 option.  Kendrick is a waste of a roster spot at any price.

  3. Polyester GregoryDuncanMclean Disagree….Kendrick is a solid player and a proven performer…what ever you get out of Kike is a plus, but expecting Utley to be anything more than a weak hitter at this point is delusional…..and he has really slowed down in the field…the scouting report, and the record so far on Johnson is that he is a weak fielder, and an average hitter…and although Barnes has played 2nd he is still primarily a catcher. If anyone is wasting roster space it is Utley…
