Dodgers Rumors: Dodgers, Royals Talking Justin Maxwell & Dee Gordon

Justin MaxwellThe Los Angeles Dodgers will leave the Winter Meetings without making a marquee signing or trade, but the groundwork for future deals seems to be laid as GM Ned Colletti said yesterday he’s been talking to several agents and teams.

All trade talks this week centered around the Dodgers trading Matt Kemp, but it was reported yesterday that Colletti reassured his agent, Dave Stewart, he won’t be dealt this winter. However, that still means another outfielder could be dealt and according to Bob Dutton of The Tacoma News Tribune, they could be close to acquiring a fourth outfielder:

The deal would be interesting on several fronts as all winter long the Dodgers have been grooming Gordon to be a super-utility player. Gordon played outfield during a his stint in Winter Ball and was poised to fill Skip Schumaker’s utility role.

Still just 25-years-old, Gordon’s greatest strength is his speed, but his shaky defense and inability to get on-base has been frustrating. In his career, Gordon has a .301 OBP and has made 35 errors in 160 games. Meanwhile, acquiring Maxwell would give the Dodgers a nice right-handed bat off the bench and could be a nice compliment to either Andre Ethier or Carl Crawford.

Maxwell put things together in 2012 in Houston with 18 home runs and 53 RBI, but hit just .229 with a .304 OBP. Traded to the Royals last season, the 30-year-old outfielder saw his average and on-base percentage rise, but he’d be nothing more than a fourth outfielder in LA.

It remains to be seen if the Dodgers and Royals can agree to a deal, but it would seem to fit both teams needs as the Dodgers could then deal one of their high-priced outfielders while the Royals are in the market for another infielder.

  1. Wouldn’t that make Maxwell a 5th OF’er with the Dodgers? Crawford, Kemp, Ethier, and Puig still all here assuming no trades…

  2. keep all of them, you know someone is going to get hurt..rotate them. awesome outfield all around strong, all season long..
