Dodgers Rumors: Finding an Ethier Trade Suitor

Rumors are rumors are rumors are rumors, as they say. And, today, there was a rumor posted on a Baltimore Orioles site that is a little interesting namely because the Los Angeles Dodgers are involved. The trade centers around Andre Ethier and Alex Wood, with the Dodgers getting talent back.

The Orioles made a play for left fielder Yoenis Cespedes this offseason, only to see Cespedes turn down that offer and re-sign with the New York Mets. Due to this, the Orioles still need another outfielder despite the fact they signed Korean export Hyun Soo Kim. Enter a trade rumor.

ICYMI: Clayton Kershaw On Brink of Milestone

From the Eutaw Street Report, a Baltimore Orioles blog site:

I’ll throw out a proposed package of Harvey, Reyes and Wilson for instance. That would be a pretty good package I think and you could add to it with some fringe prospects as well.

This is just one writer’s suggestion, not something that’s being floated out there. The trade would send Ethier and Wood to the Orioles in exchange for Hunter Harvey, Jomar Reyes, and Tyler Wilson. It’s an intriguing deal, for sure.

Harvey is arguably the Orioles’ number one prospect, but he missed all of 2015 after Tommy John surgery. In 2014, he finished with 106 strikeouts in 87.2 innings at A-ball. Reyes is another top prospect, but he’s not a pitcher. He’s an 18-year old third baseman who OPS’d .774 in A-ball last season. Wilson is a solid pitching prospect, but nothing big time.

In reality, this wouldn’t be a bad haul for the Dodgers if they explored this route. They’d get a young pitching prospect in Harvey, a super young third base prospect in Reyes, and a decent fill-in prospect that could develop in the future in Wilson.

Trading Ethier, and to a lesser extent Wood, is going to be a tough thing if the team doesn’t feel like they’re going to get anything worthwhile back in exchange. It’s hard to say if the Dodgers want “win now” talent back or guys for the future. I guess we’ll find out if they do decide to move him.

  1. Jagman63  CC will not get traded, nobody wants him, and they just got Thompson. so that makes no sense

  2. Michael Norris Jagman63  I was not making a trade package with those two. I was answering a question as to who would play left field for the Dodgers if Ethier gets traded. Duhhh.

  3. If LA isn’t having to pick up contract money in this proposed trade, then it looks like a good one, even if Ethier was at times our most productive OF last season.  Amazing how the team thought Wood was the answer last July, and now he doesn’t even figure in the rotation, and they are eager to ship him out of town.

  4. Darviathar  Trust me, any Ethier trade is going to cost the Dodgers money. He is simply owed too much to be a part time outfielder. He also has a vesting option that calls for a 17 million dollar salary, or a 2.5 mil buy out. As far as Wood goes, he is pretty much the only option if someone goes down to injury. Especially with the other options being Frias, who is a 5 inning pitcher, Bolsinger, who can’t break glass with his fastball, and Brandon Beachy, who is a wild card anyway you look at it….

  5. I am sorry, but this is not a realistic trade option.  Harvey, Ramos, and Wilson are three of the Orioles top 10 prospects. I do not see the Orioles even contemplating this transaction.  I am sure they want both Ethier and Wood.  That would help their two glaring 2016 holes, OF hitter and SP.

Secondly, I am not sold that Seager will be a permanent SS in the future.  Reyes is a 3B and by the time he is ready to come up, Seager may have outgrown SS to move to 3B.  Plus Reyes does not grade out any better than Brendon Davis, who will probably be moved to 3B in the future.  Wilson is 26 RHSP, who does not miss bats – 63K in 94.1 IP.  The Dodgers have enough organizational RHSP.

The prize would be Hunter Harvey.  But as thin as the Orioles are on SP, I cannot see them moving their one pitcher who can be a frontline starter in the future.  I am an Alex Wood fan,  but no way does he replace the potential of Hunter Harvey.  The Dodgers are going to have to include Walker Buehler in any trade involving Hunter Harvey.

If Wood is included in any move, the Dodgers have enough SP to be the insurance if one of the SP gets injured (and better than Tyler Wilson).

If FAZ could pull this off as projected, I would think they would be getting the better of the transaction.

  6. For days huh? Then you are late to the party since they’ve been talking about it for over a month.
