Dodgers Rumors: John Lackey Getting Interest From Team

A familiar storyline this offseason has been the Los Angeles Dodgers’ need for starting pitching. And by “familiar storyline” I mean dead horse being beaten perpetually as zero actual news is made. Wow, that got dark quickly.

Anyway, the latest starting pitcher tied to the Dodgers is John Lackey, who is now somehow potentially on his fourth (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Boston Red Sox and Saint Louis Cardinals) professional baseball team.

ICYMI: Greinke to Washington or San Francisco?

This, via Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports:

At age 36, Lackey tied a career high in games started (36). His bounce-back season in 2015 went beyond that. He threw 218 innings with a 2.77 ERA, 177 Ks and a 1.211 WHIP.

Wow.

Now, this isn’t to say he would replicate that season with the Dodgers or whoever signs him this winter. But if he’s something close to that, he’d immediately become one of the best back-end starters and boasts postseason success as well.

He may be tough to work with as widely reported, but it’s tough to overlook what he might bring to the team. Lackey by no means would make the offseason, — the Dodgers have plenty of work to do — but he would be a fairly nice addition if brought in for the right price.

While Zack Greinke and David Price has (rightfully) garnered most the attention these last couple months, smaller moves will need to be made to fill out the rotation as well. Lackey was one of those such moves for the Cardinals last season. If he’s anything close to what he (and chances are he won’t be), whoever does sign him will have made a great gamble.
