Dodgers Rumors: Michael Young Considering Retirement At Season’s End

When he accepted a trade to the Dodgers at the end of August, Michael Young knew he wouldn’t be an everyday player. With the Texas Rangers, Young went to two straight World Series, but wanted to come to LA to get his first championship.

The Dodgers have Juan Uribe starting everyday at third and Adrian Gonzalez at first base, but with the recent string of injuries, Young has seen a lot of action. However, in his 14th season in the big leagues, Young is reportedly thinking about retirement according to Ken Gurnick of Dodgers.com:

Dodgers infielder Michael Young is rumored to be considering retirement after this season, but he said he hasn’t thought about anything beyond this year. I’m too focused on what I’m doing on this team, said the 36-year-old Young. Winning is the sole priority, and we’re playing as hard as we can in the name of winning games. Anything else is not on the radar. There will be a time and place for that, just not now.

In 37 plate appearances with the Dodgers, Young is hitting .389 with four RBIs as he’s started taking ground balls at second base so he could be ready in an emergency situation.

While the Dodgers locked up the NL West, manager Don Mattingly wants to give his regulars some rest, so expect Young to get some starts with just a handful of game left. If the Dodgers were to advance to the World Series, Young would also be a candidate to DH as he’s hitting .250 for his career in the postseason.

A World Series ring might be the one thing that would get Young to retire, but it sounds like he’s focused on winning games with his hometown team.
